Genesis 4-6

Summary:

Story of Cain and Abel.  Cain kills Abel, then regrets it deeply.  He wants to die, but God punishes Cain for killing Abel by making sure no one kills him.  Honestly, it doesn't sound like his life is that bad because he eventually marries and has kids and built a city.  Anyone have any thought about this?

Then the lineage of Adam starts and everyone lives to 800 or 900 years old.  Then starts the story of Noah and the flood.  Everyone seemed to have kids pretty early, like when they were 65-185 years old, but Noah didn't start having kids until he was about 500 years old.

  1. First murder in the bible story. I don't know if Cain regretted it deeply that he killed Abel (or else he wouldn't pretend he didn't know where Abel was when God asked him); I think he was just scared of the punishment that was to come. Come to think about it, it's really scary when you read the first 4 chapters and the prominence of sin: first lie, first shame, first murder... the Fall of Man was fast - how sad :-( (I have to say, you can see God's grace already by how He spared Cain's life...)

  2. When I was a kid I used to wonder why God was prejudiced towards vegetables. Cain gave vegetables and Abel gave fattened meat. What's wrong with vegetables? It wasn't until I was much older that I realized that it was more the fact that Abel gave the BEST portions of the meat, while Cain just gathered some random vegetables.

And yeah, I agree with Yummy, God is REALLY gracious here! He protected Abel from death. Although I was a bit confused wondering who else in the world existed that would kill him. Oh well, maybe Adam and Eve had already had lots of kids by then.
